Tidal and Coastal Structures

Our operating area is bounded by the sea. Inevitably, we've developed a wide expertise and strong reputation in working in tidal marine environments, using our vast expertise on many unique tidal and coastal structures.

Our Civils teams have repaired sea walls and constructed flood defence systems, strengthened bridges across estuaries and refurbished busy promenades in tourist areas.

Working in tidal zones is routine for us – we regularly employ proven mitigating strategies for dealing with the particular challenges tidal working presents, including short construction windows, shift working, coping with the needs of marine traffic and specific environmental concerns.

Examples of tidal and coastal structures projects include:

  • Livermead Beach wall, Torbay – This contract required the installation of approximately 1500m3 of 4 tonne boulders as rock armour to provide protection to a 35m length of the base of the nineteenth century masonry sea wall which supports the busy A3022 between Torquay and Paignton
  • Appledore Quay - Redesign and construction of sea wall.  The project was undertaken in a number of phases to accommodate the fish quay’s continuous activity
  • Teign Viaduct, Newton Abbot -  Replacement of waterproofing on 40 year old bridge which carries the A380 dual carriageway over the tidal River Teign Estuary. The scope of works involved planing off the asphalt surface, removing the waterproofing system from the concrete bridge deck and hydrodemolition before the replacement phase of the work.
