Plymouth City Airport Link Road
This scheme, in a busy urban area, provided a link road to Plymouth Airport and infrastructure to support future developments in the area.
- Full construction of 600m link road, spurs, footway and shared cycleway
- Highway drainage and connections
- Signing and lighting
- Associated Section 278 works
- Provision of a new signalised junction on the existing duals sections of Tavistock Road to provide a dedicated bus lane.
Prior to the road construction, SWH demolished part of an existing aircraft hangar and a two storey office building before completing 8,700m³ cut and fill earthworks in clays, weathered shillet and rock. Utility services were coordinated to provide future connection points for a planned housing development.
The scheme had a strict programme and rigid budget. Additional items of work were added to the original programme, however the scheme was successfully completed to the satisfaction of the client. The introduction of staged completions to meet Client commitments was successfully achieved, including development of the existing drainage design to overcome percolation issues and the provision of functioning soak-aways. 3,000 tonnes of site won crushed concrete was recycled as capping material.
