Highbridge Enterprise Centre

This project comprised of the design and build of the £1.2m Enterprise Centre at the Isleport Business Park.  The purpose behind the development was to provide suitable accommodation for small growing businesses and local start-ups, helping to stimulate local enterprise.

Our works included:

  • The design and build of a large steel framed commercial building containing three units, each with their own kitchen, toilet area and front roll shutter door
  • The design and build of a large steel framed office block, consisting of 11 10m² office units on the ground floor, with a meeting room, lift with disabled access, disabled toilets and tea points
  • Service installation
  • The provision of parking space

The final buildings were finished with high performance materials to enhance their life-cycle. All aspects of the building design – material sourcing, construction and operation were carefully considered in order to minimise the site’s overall carbon footprint, including Photovoltaics.

The main challenge encountered during the project was working on a busy industrial estate, in close proximity to an adjoining public waste recycling centre.  Within the design of the centre, SWH Build had to take into consideration the movement of large delivery vehicles around the site, whilst minimising the impact on other site users and adjacent businesses.  The Site Manager helped to overcome these hurdles by building good relations with recycling centre staff and organising a monthly meeting to discuss forthcoming activities and movements.  Another challenge faced was the site resting on a level 3 flood zone, resulting in us raising the levels of the site.

The project was successfully completed on time and within budget.  It was also registered and highly praised by the ‘Considerate Constructors Scheme’ with comments including “The site is tidy, well organised and presented” and “the team are attentive to environmental issues and have some good initiatives in place concerning waste, energy and water management.”  We also achieved the ‘Performing Beyond Compliance’ standard.
