The Grade II listed Bournemouth landmark, which is managed by BH Live in partnership with the council, was surveyed in early 2016 and a large number of important external repair projects were identified.
Built in the 1920s, the popular seaside venue houses an active Art Deco theatre and ballroom alongside cafés, bars, and meeting rooms. It is also home to Pavilion Dance South West and AUB at Pavilion who run performance and dance studios within the complex.
The works comprised the refurbishment and general improvements to the south, west and east elevations of Bournemouth's Pavilion Theatre building including:
- Removal & replacement of illuminated signage
- Replacement of soffits and fascias throughout
- Cast iron gutter shot blasting & waterproof lining
- Roof & gully repairs
- Specialist stone cleaning and repairs
SWH Build started on site in September 2016 with a programme of 15 weeks. However, it quickly became apparent that the Pavilion was in need of more substantial works than originally thought and, once access was in place, required further detailed stone surveys and repairs, increasing the final programme to 26 weeks.
As with all projects on live buildings the Pavilion presented challenges on keeping facilities operational, particularly over the busy Christmas period with shows and events planned.
The SWH team worked closely with Pavilion management to minimise disruption and schedule disruptive activities outside of show times, as well as programming key works to enable early scaffolding strikes on elevations requiring the sea view.
The project was completed ahead of final programme in March 2017.
“We were very pleased with the standard of workmanship and professionalism from SWH Build. The site manager communicated well with us to organise noisy work around sensitive events in this operational theatre, drama centre and dance studios.
The works were completed to a very high standard, and completed on time. We would certainly be happy to work with SWH again on future projects.”
Bob Olding, Principal Engineer, Bournemouth Borough Council
“Rund Partnership were impressed by the competency, workmanship and timely manner in which the works were undertaken, along with the responsiveness of the site team to additional items and the pressures of working in a live environment such as Bournemouth’s Pavilion Theatre.
We look forward to working with SWH Build on many more future projects.”
