SWH Group scoops Apprenticeship Development Award

SWH Group has been awarded the Apprenticeship Development Award at this year’s Plymouth Herald Business Awards.

The ceremony, which took place 20 April at Plymouth Pavilions, saw more than 500 attendees gather to celebrate businesses that have helped shape the city’s success over the past year.

The awards had 17 categories and were presented by Paul Burton, Editor of The Herald and Sarah Pullen, regional managing director for The Herald's parent South West Trinity Mirror plc.

SWH Group teams up with The Royal Marines Charity

SWH Group has teamed up with The Royal Marines Charity to support Royal Marines.

One of SWH’s objectives as a National Skills Academy for Construction (NSAfC) is to provide Taster Days for under-represented groups. This month, we offered a Taster Day to The Royal Marines Charity in Lympstone.

The Royal Marines Charity is an organisation that supports Royal Marines who face leaving, or have left the service due to injury, in their transition to civilian life and to help them to pursue challenging and enduring careers.

SWH Group’s annual Apprentice of the Year has been announced, with the award going to Sam Moore, a Business Administration Apprentice working within the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) department.

Sam has been working at SWH Group for just over two years as part of his apprenticeship with Exeter College. His role is varied and he carries out a range of duties related to incidents, SHEQ Events, TRACA, face fit testing, calibration, LOLER and at our Annual Safety Days. New intake for SWH

SWH has just announced it is to recruit several Apprentice Roadworkers.

As part of a two year scheme, the successful candidates will learn the vital skills needed for highway maintenance through on the job training and at our dedicated training facilities at Rockbeare.

At the end of the two-year Apprenticeship, each candidate will have qualifications in various disciplines, including a Level 2 NVQ, Traffic Management, Street Works and Emergency First Aid at Work.

South West Highways Ltd (SWH) is pleased to welcome its 222nd apprentice. Ruben Forrester, 19, of Okehampton, Devon, is undertaking an NVQ Level 2 in Highways Maintenance (Construction) – Excavation Operations which he will complete in 2017.

After enrolling at university to study filmmaking and media, Ruben soon realised that this path wasn’t right for him and returned home after a year. Ruben wanted to take on a challenging, hands-on role that would teach him a variety of skills and looked into apprenticeships for various trades, such as plumbing and carpentry, before settling on the scheme offered by SWH.

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) recognises SWH as having one of the highest achieving National Skills Academy for Construction in the country for second year running

SWH Apprentice Road Worker Awarded City and Guilds Gold Medal for Excellence

Paul Dainton who works for South West Highways in Newton Abbot is the second SWH Apprentice to have won this award. 

The 30-year-old was awarded the award at the City and Guilds of London Institute's annual Prince Philip Medal ceremony which was presented by Princess Anne, who is president of the Institute.

SWH Build hosts site visit from Teignmouth College

Last month Nick Ford and his team at the Broadmeadow Employment Unit site, Teignmouth kindly took the time to show around 15 students from Teignmouth College.

The students, who are currently studying for a BTEC in Construction, where given a tour led by Nick, Site Manager. The visit included a site induction, an introduction to all site personnel and their roles, an understanding of plans, construction type, followed by a Q&A Session.
