SWH sets gold standard at RoSPA Awards

SWH has had its approach to occupational safety and health recognised in an awards scheme run by the safety charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

It is SWH's sixth consecutive Gold Award and meant the company picked up its second Gold Medal in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2013.

SWH Build appoints Area Manager for Poole Office

SWH Build has announced the appointment of Luke Trussler as Area Manager for their Poole Office, commencing April 2013.

The growing regional office offers a local service reaching typically an hour's travelling time to Bridport, Yeovil, Salisbury and Southampton.

In harmony with the company's ethos of servicing local markets through local people, Luke is long experienced in the area, living and working there since he returned home from New Zealand in 2005. Since then he has gained considerable experience in the social housing sector.

In addition to area responsibility, Luke will strengthen SWH Build's offering to its social housing customers.

SWH receives City and Guilds Medal for Excellence

SWH and one of our employees have been awarded the prestigious City and Guilds Gold Medal for Excellence.

The award is in recognition of the achievements of apprentice Jed Saunders and the outstanding level of training SWH has provided.

Jed, from Exeter, has won the award for his fantastic efforts that have seen him obtain a number of qualifications and develop a high level of ability and technical knowledge in various Highway Maintenance operations.

SWH weathers the storm at the Grand Western Canal

SWH engineers worked through the night to secure the Great Western Canal after the damage caused by floods on Wednesday 21 November.

The freak weather conditions overcame the canal at Halberton, causing its bed to disappear and leaving a void down one side.

The engineers worked tirelessly to construct three dams at Rock Bridge, Grenway Bridge and Tiverton Road Bridge.  The works involved making the affected areas water tight, building a temporary retaining wall and dam and lowering the canal's water levels.

Seven young men have engineered a bright future for themselves thanks to an apprenticeship scheme provided by ‘South West Highways (SWH) Training’.

The apprentices have spent the past two years learning both the theoretical and practical aspects of highway maintenance work, from traffic management to road construction.

Having completed the Highway Maintenance course, the apprentices were awarded with their professional qualifications; their CSCS Operative cards, NVQ level 2 in Highways Maintenance (Excavation Operations) and Level 2 Diploma in Highways Maintenance (Excavation Operations).

Innovative way of working for our Joint Venture

SWH works in joint venture as the Design, Build, Finance and Operate (DBFO) Contractor for Connect Roads for the maintenance of Highways and associated works for the A30 and A35 Trunk Road from Exeter to Poole.

This is a joint venture with Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services.

A section of the A35, totalling 8.5 miles, required routine and general maintenance. SWH suggested an innovative and completely new idea to the Highways Agency; to close 8.5miles of road for a 36 hour period and complete the necessary routine maintenance in one go. Three SWH divisions help the Olympic Torch pass through Devon, sparking praise!

On 21 May the Olympic Torch went from Exeter to Taunton, and SWH provided assistance to help the historic event run smoothly

SWH Traffic Management provided support by stopping traffic at Shaldon Bridge and Exeter, ensuring the Flame's procession could pass safely and the large crowd were able to watch the historic event without disruption. South West Highways wins Highways Agency Award

SWH delighted to be presented with a prestigious health and safety award at recent ceremony

The newly created supplier recognition scheme acknowledges the efforts of the HA's supply chain and their innovations which help them deliver a better service in the improvement of the road network in England.

Our application was triggered by an idea from an employee through our in-house suggestion scheme.

A project undertaken at Wellesley Park Primary School has been awarded the Somerset LABC "Best Education Project Award"
