Career Progression Story: Focus Lloyd Phelps, Estimator

Lloyd joined South West Highways in 2011 and started his career within the Commercial Department. Initially his daily role included assisting the Build Estimator and Business Development Coordinator with putting together subcontract enquiries, pre-qualification questionnaires, ensuring all trade associations were up to date and carrying out administrative duties for the team.

From day one Lloyd showed great potential and was keen to take the opportunity to develop himself. As time went on he began to show an interest in the estimating side of the business and as the Build division began to grow, he started to spend more time assisting with pricing jobs.

A year after settling into the Business Development Team, Lloyd became a full time Estimating Assistant for SWH Build. Lloyd worked hard and was encouraged by SWH to pursue a career in Estimating further, subsequently becoming a full time Estimator in 2013. He has since priced jobs such as Frome Enterprise Centre and Uffculme School Refurbishment.

In terms of his academic career, prior to joining the company, Lloyd had hoped to gain a career within the construction industry. He studied Business Economics, Geography and PE at Queen Elizabeth Community College in Crediton and also completed a day release HNC course in construction at Somerset College with his previous employer Michael Thorne Construction. When the company went into administration, Lloyd took it upon himself to continue studying independently.

SWH is proud to be an Investor in People and as part of our commitment to the scheme; we take Learning and Development seriously and are keen to provide everyone with the opportunity to develop within their role. Lloyd recently undertook a Site Management Safety Training Scheme with Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). This broadened his knowledge of working on site, as well as the health and safety aspects associated with this role.

Since being at SWH Lloyd has also started and achieved Associate Membership with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Lloyd said, ‘SWH has continued to support me throughout my career and encouraged me to develop. In the future I hope to get stuck into more training opportunities to enhance my current role as an Estimator’.
