Old Exeter Road, Kingsteignton (Roads)

The works provide highway and junction improvements to facilitate the future development of approximately 600 housing units.

They briefly comprise of the widening of just under 1km of existing carriageway, construction of a new traffic signal controlled T-junction, 150m of new carriageway, and junction improvements to an existing roundabout to change into a 4 way signal controlled junction with dedicated filter lanes.

The above works have involved:

  • A new positive drainage system made up of conventional gullies and carrier drainage and a shallow combined kerb drain system used to avoid the existing High Pressure Gas main running the entire length of the works.
  • Five high-voltage and one low-voltage cable diversions, protection of an existing Medium Pressure Gas main.
  • The installation of over 2.5km of traffic signals and street lighting ducting with associated draw-pits, chambers and pole boxes.

The earthworks have involved both cut and structural fill of some 4800m3 of material.

Early Contractor involvement was established by the Client to assist with planning and programming so the project can be delivered within a tight timeframe and with a fixed budget. The project lies between an existing residential area with a busy secondary school, business park and an extensive working quarry which has required close liaison with all interested and affected parties.
