About South West Highways
Our origins are in highways maintenance as a new company formed specifically to win the Devon County Council highways contract in 1995. That’s why we’re owned by two substantial highways businesses, Colas Ltd and Eurovia UK Ltd.
We did win the contract and we held this substantial contract for more than 20 years, providing the tremendous stability and strength for us to develop a business which is diverse and sustainable. We’ve developed a number of business streams, each embracing our very special style, which have been built on the skills of our people.
Building a local business
We maintained and improved bridges and coastal structures so we developed a civil engineering business, SWH Civils, operating in the open market. The way we directly employ people and invest in them, generated a high demand for specialist training and again we built a business out of it. SWH Training is now a successful National Skills Academy and a leading training and apprenticeships provider in the construction sector, contributing substantially to the development of national standards and, for example, trailblazer apprenticeships.
A regional employer
Because we are a regional business, operating in the south west, a substantial employer and because of what we do, we are actively committed to our communities. Our natural business style is to be cooperative and helpful but it’s probably better that you hear this from some people we work with. Here's what our clients think of us:
Our nature blends perfectly with a professional way of working. For example, we are accredited to a number of quality standards; ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, BS 11000 and OSHAS 18001.
